BROCADE

Brocade is a class of richly decorative shuttle-woven fabrics, often with intricate patterns that include flowers, plants, and other natural images. It is usually woven on a loom with a selection of various types of colored silk that are accented with metallic threads as a means of adding texture and visual interest. The name comes from the Italian broccato meaning embossed cloth.

Condition

 Condition:

 GOOD

In overall good condition. Antique and vintage items by their very nature show normal wear to finish and miscellaneous scratches, nicks, and dings due to age and use. As we define 'good condition' relative to the stated age of the piece, we would expect to see 'character marks' consistent with that age and could include nicks or dings to a wooden, metal, enamel, or chalkware object, wear to a painted surface, speckling on a mirror, crazing, wear to gilding, or manufacturing glaze skips in ceramic finish, wear to a label, and some original decorative trim may be missing. If ceramic/porcelain restoration has been done, it is of museum-quality so that it is hardly discernible and would be specifically mentioned in the listing. 'Good condition' could include very small fleabite chips or very small hairline cracks in any glass, ceramic, or marble item, but these would be specifically mentioned in the listing.

 Item Specifics:

Shows normal wear to fabric due to age and use.

RENAISSANCE REVIVAL: HENRY II AND HUNTING STYLES

As the middle class rose in status and wealth with the advent of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, more people were able to afford furniture. This flattening of society in combination with technological advancements created a surge of furniture production. Improved transportation meant a greater variety of wood was available at lower costs. For the first time, furniture became accessible and affordable to the common man. From the 1830s to the end of the 19th century, furniture makers reached back to earlier historical styles, and reinterpreted them with a great deal of creativity and experimentation. Although machines were used to increase speed and productivity, most of the carvings were still done by hand. Consumers were hungry for large, ornate and heavily carved furniture that would impress their friends and family and show off their newly found wealth.

The Renaissance Revival style is marked by massive proportions and heavy, ornate carvings. Most furniture was produced in dark oak and walnut. There are actually several sub-styles that fall under the broader Renaissance Revival style and include the Henry II (Henri II) style, Hunting style, Mechelen style, and Louis XIII style.

In France, the Renaissance style is often referred to as Henry II (Henri II) style, based on the reign of Henry II (1547 - 1559), although it is surprising that the style was not named for his father, Francis I. Considered to be the great French Renaissance monarch, Francis I (1515 - 1547), a contemporary of Henry VIII in England, was a great supporter of the Arts and the Humanities. Enamored with Italian Renaissance art and architecture, he convinced Leonardo da Vinci and other great Italian artists to move to France and work at his court, decorating his many palaces and chateaux (palaces out in the country rather than in Paris) in the lush Loire Valley. He actively collected artistic works by Raphael, Michelangelo, and Titian, which were the beginning of the magnificent art collection of the French kings on display today in the Louvre in Paris. Decorative hallmarks of the Henry II style include arches, pediments, columns, finials, carved flowers, fruit, scrolls and often references to Greek and Roman mythology, including male and female heads, faces or figures.

The Hunting style developed as an exotic way to decorate the royal and aristocratic hunting lodges (the chateaux of the Loire Valley). Furniture makers specialized in detailed carvings of winged griffins, lion's heads, and trophies of the hunt, including deer, fish, eels, rabbits, birds, and dogs. Lush foliage in the form of leaves and berries were often carved along edges of buffets and on the backs of chairs, while the bases of tables were often carved to represent the beasts of the hunt: dogs, boars, deer, and foxes. 19th century consumers of the Renaissance Revival style were crazy for the massive, heavily carved and ornate Hunting style and many pieces also included intricate stained glass doors in the upper cabinets.

 CERAMIC

The word ceramic originates from the ancient Greek word keramikos, meaning potter's clay. The practice of making ceramics has been in existence for nearly 30,000 years. Clay, the primary ingredient for any ceramic, is primarily made of aluminum silicate, which is a malleable soil from crumbling rocks. Ceramics can be grouped according to the type of clay used, the temperature at which the clay is fired, and the duration of the firing.

MAJOLICA, FAIENCE, AND DERUTA

The invention of a pottery glaze for decorative use with the addition of tin oxide to the slip of a lead glaze occurred in Persia before the 9th century. Tin glaze turns into opaque white enamel when fired. Majolica and faience are synonymous terms, which refer to hand-painted earthenware pottery on which a tin glaze has been used.

The term majolica has its origin in the name of the Spanish island, Majorca (Maiorca), which was a transshipping point for tin-glazed wares being transported from the kingdom of Aragon in Spain to Italy in the 14th and 15th centuries. This type of pottery drew inspiration from the Moorish influence in Spain. Ships arriving from Majorca landed at the port of Pisa, so it is easy to trace on a map how the production of majolica spread through Tuscany to the Umbria region with its rich deposits of clay in the hills around Orvieto, Gubbio and Deruta, and to Faenza in the Emilia Romagna area. The term faience is the French word for the city of Faenza, one of the major producers of majolica for export as early as the 15th century. Eventually the production of majolica, or faience, spread to France,

Germany, Holland, Portugal, and England as well. Plateel is the Dutch word which means Majolica.

Italian majolica, or faience, reached its zenith in the 15th and 16th centuries, although it is still in production today.

Several styles of decoration developed over the centuries and different cities had their own unique interpretations. Quick brush strokes and the Moorish influence of interwoven leaves, flowers, arabesques, birds and other animals are hallmarks of Italian majolica. Depictions of beautiful courtly ladies and gentlemen were popular, as well as the styles known as Ricco, Rafaellesco, Arabesco, and Gallo.

The Ricco style dates from the 15th century and is one of the most classic and enduring majolica styles. It is also known as Ricco Deruta or just Deruta, and is recognized by the use of blue, orange and yellow and a stylized fleur di lis with many swirls.

The Rafaellesco style dates from the 16th century and is attributed to the Italian Renaissance master artist, Raphael, who created the stylized dragon as a symbol of good luck and fair winds (notice the puffs of wind coming from the dragon's mouth) for the seagoing merchants of the era. Bright yellow and blue are the predominant colors.

Birds are the central motif of both the Arabesco and Gallo styles. The Arabesco style features a dove on an abstract background and was commonly painted in blue, red, green, or in polychrome. The Gallo, or Rooster, style originated in Orvieto and features the symbol of good luck in Italy, the crowing rooster. Like the Arabesco style, the Gallo style is found in blue, red, green, or in polychrome.

FRENCH COUNTRY / FRENCH PROVINCIAL

Throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, the very best furniture craftsmen in France worked in Paris. Competition for the available positions was fierce. Pieces found today that are marked with signatures from Parisian workshops are recognized as being of very high quality. However, quite a lot of furniture production also occurred outside of Paris in rural villages throughout France. Furniture makers often found apprenticeships with craftsmen far from their homes so they could bring innovative styles and increased knowledge back to their villages. Although loosely based on the styles of Louis XV and Louis XVI, provincial furniture makers developed their own interpretation of these styles, which tended to have more of a rustic charm. They often worked in oak, walnut and cherry. Chairs, especially with a ladder back design, commonly had rush-bottoms rather than upholstery.

 PEWTER

Pewter is a metal alloy, traditionally between 85 and 99% tin, with the remainder consisting of copper, antimony, and lead, and has traditionally been used to make tableware and decorative items. Pewter is highly ductile, meaning that it can easily be worked, embossed, or carved, and has been in use since at least Roman times. Pewter starts out glossy and bright and over time the metal oxidizes, acquiring a nice grayish patina.

The tradition of marking high quality pewter began in the 14th century and continues today. Typical quality marks include the rose stamp, the crown stamp, and the angel stamp featuring the Arc Angel Michael with a balance and sword.

Condition

 Condition:

LOUIS XV AND THE ROCOCO REVIVAL STYLE

The nephew of Napoleon, Napoleon III (1852 - 1870), Emperor of the Second Empire, has the unusual distinction of being both the last monarch of France and the first President of the French Republic. Napoleon III married the beautiful Spanish Countess, Eug‚nie de Montijo, whose aristocratic extravagance in dress and jewels reflected her ornate personal taste in furniture and decorative arts, and influenced French furniture makers to reach back to the designs from the glorious court of Louis XV (1715 - 1774) at Versailles for inspiration, creating the Rococo Revival style.

The extreme level of exuberant extravagance that blossomed under the reign of Louis XV and his favorite mistress, Madame du Pompadour, is known as the Rococo style. The word Rococo is thought to be a combination of the French rocaille, or shell, and the Italian barocco, or Baroque style. The rounded extravagance of the Rococo Revival style, enormously popular in the 19th century, was based on the original 18th century style. Hallmarks of this style, also known as the Louis XV style, include detailed carvings of birds, flowers (especially roses) and leaves, fruit, and shells. Furniture overflowed with massive carvings and grandiose S and C curves. The cabriole leg, which means a knee leg with concave rounded ankle, was very popular and is also a trademark of the Louis XV style. Rosewood and walnut were popularly used in the Rococo Revival style, along with a great interest in white marble for vanities, nightstands, and parlor tables.

As furniture began to be created cooperatively in workshops, the practice of signing pieces (required by law from 1743 to 1789) was not as prevalent. Most French pieces from the 19th century do not have maker's marks or signatures.

Armoire  If you like big gemstones and earthy hues, the large smoky quartz rounds of this estate bracelet will captivate you instantly. This impressive bracelet measures 11/16" wide across the gem portion and tapers to 3/8" at the back. The approximate inside length is 7".

Each smoky quartz gemstone is individually cut and polished and has a large, clear table that, by adding to the weight and depth of the stone, maximizes the color. The bracelet has 20 stones, each approximately 8mm in diameter. Since they are set I can only approximate weight but a conservative total is 24 carats. The prong settings have good, deep cups to protect the sides of the gemstones as well as the culets. The bracelet has total flexibility across the wrist since each vertical pair of stones is hinged to move independently. This unique construction suggests the piece is not American.

The closure is a smooth bar that snaps firmly and is reinforced with an attached safety chain. The metal does not test as 10K gold so it is gold-filled, heavily plated finish, or a lower carat gold. The condition is excellent. The stones will compliment just about any shade of earth tones while their size and richness fetch many admiring glances.

STICKLEY AND MISSION STYLE

Gustav Stickley of the American Craftsman Furniture Company, was greatly influenced by the principles and designs of the English Arts and Crafts movement and by the simplicity and utilitarian emphasis of the Shakers. However, rather than shunning the use of machinery, he embraced the use of machines as a way to help the worker avoid drudgery. Hallmarks of the Craftsman, or Mission style, are simple straight lines without ornamentation and a revealing of the structural elements of the piece. Stickley not only produced furniture, but also designed homes, had his own retail store with accessories for the home and even published magazines on how to live, decorate and entertain. Other furniture producers followed in Stickley's footsteps and these pieces are often called Mission style furniture, as being reminiscent of pieces from Spanish colonial churches with block shapes and jointed construction.

VELVET/VELOUR

Velvet is a soft pile fabric that has been manufactured for almost 4,000 years. It can be made from any type of thread, although traditionally velvet was made with silk thread leading to its high cost. Velour, velveteen and corduroy are more inexpensive versions of velvet using cotton and synthetic fibers. EuroLux Antiques uses the term velvet/velour as it is often difficult to determine if the fabric has been made with silk or synthetic fibers.

RELIGIOUS

Religion is often described as a communal system for the coherence of belief focusing on a system of thought, unseen being, person, or object that is considered sacred, divine, or of the highest truth. The Christian religion is centered on the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth. Christians believe Jesus is the Son of God.

Christianity has played a prominent role in shaping Western civilization since the 4th century. Currently Christianity has between 1.5 billion and 2.1 billion followers, representing about a quarter to a third of the world's population. With more than 1 billion members, the Roman Catholic Church is the largest church representing over half of all Christians and one sixth of the world's population.
